shoppers and crystal tree by wvs
Every day I visit the website daily dose of imagery because I have serious photo envy, and because I like to torture myself by looking at photos of Toronto and getting homesick.
Yesterday he posted this photo of one of the big shopping centers in downtown Toronto at x-mas. When I first saw it wondered why it wasn’t busier with Christmas and all…. then it dawned on me – holy crap that IS busy by Canadian standards!
My concept of ‘busy’ has changed completely since moving over here to the Netherlands. Smaller country, more people, less malls – it all makes for crazy shopping conditions at pretty much any time of day / year.
Seriously, if you went to one of the malls here in Rotterdam on a Tuesday afternoon in March, this is what you would find. It’s not considered busy here, it’s just the way it is. Busy is when you are taking that photo and can’t see the floor anymore.
This reminds me of how much I miss space sometimes. It was such a huge adjustment to get used to everything on such a smaller and more crowded scale. Now when I go back to Canada it feels weird when everything is so big and far apart.
I am – so – assimilating.
… and I am SO avoiding the malls here until January!
p.s. If you have a minute visit his site, I guarantee you’ll be still clicking through his pics an hour later!
And that is why I never went shopping in Toronto! I would go to the smaller malls around the GTA!

I kinda of think that I took the malls back home for granted although, you end up saying that about every place back home once you’ve been living in the NL’s. Your right about the timing to go, definately not a good idea to go when you know everyone will be there.

I was at this mall just before Xmas and it was waaaayy busier than this photo. In terms of measuring busy-ness, I think it’s a bit misleading :-)
Having been in Canada for 6 months after being in Amsterdam for 6 years, I would say that the Eaton Center is just as busy as the Kalverstraat over Christmas and on most weekends. During the week things thin out a lot more here in TO.
See, I’m used to the West Edmonton Mall, so that doesn’t look too busy to me either! I know what you are saying though, a few years ago Shawn and I were in Lisbon, and there were so many people everywhere!
When I first looked at the photo I was thinking to myself that it looked rather empty and you are right our ideas of busy have changed! I miss our home on 20 acres out in the middle of no where. I am so sick of feeling closed in. I’m going to go and check the website out!
