Merry Christmas from Pixel and Bailey!
We have one year to try to teach Pixel to sit still before next year’s Christmas photos! Wish us luck, we’ll need it!

Yeah, I was behind the camera making beeping and whistling noises trying to get her to look at me, she was looking at me like I was nuts. haha
Food doesn’t work? Aw, they’re a cute pair! How’s this for ambitious: next year, try a self-timer shot with all FOUR of you!

Yeah next year I’ll try the 4 of us, but for this year my next attempt will be a good shot of Xander and I :) At least we can sit still. You have any good tips for photography in low lighting like this?
Unfortunately, because it involves merging two different lighting situations — dark enough for the tree lights to show up, plus lighting two humans and two squiggly pups — it would be a little complicated.
The expensive version would require external flash(es) on a stand with a softbox (or shooting into an umbrella), triggered remotely by your camera or with a radio transmitter. (Yeah, I can hear your answer now.)
If you don’t have an external flash, skip to the next part!
The cheap version would involve directional lighting softened with a sheet, maybe. It depends on how strong the light is. Direct light is way too harsh.
You’ll need a floor lamp (or two?) with an adjustable head and a bright-enough bulb or a thin-enough sheet to soften the light that’s pointed towards the four of you and not the tree. Then put your camera on a tripod on a self-timer (or triggered with a remote if you have one), and the rest is trial and error.
This fellow used two external flashes and mentions his settings: http://danielrayphoto.blogspot.com/2009/12/using-flash-with-christmas-tree-lights.html
