A few days ago I wrote about Sony’s supposedly racist PSP ad here in the Netherlands. It would appear that Sony has caved and is pulling the ads that are causing so much controversy.
It’s sad really. They must have put some thought into it before they put the ads out there… so why give in when people get oversensitive about it? If they made the decision to do it they should have stuck with it. I think that pulling the ads now makes them more guilty than if they just ignored the whole thing and let people bitch to their hearts content.
If the people at Sony are smart enough to be able to create the wide range of products they offer, surely to god they are smart enough to know that people (North Americans in particular) will cry foul at any chance.

Laura, I thought the same thing. I’m sure these ads must go through many hands before they hit the streets, so I’m sure at least ONE person must have looked at it and thought it could be controvercial. There’s no way the ads were put out there without them knowing some people might get weird about it. They should have just left it alone, this is definately like admitting guilt.
well, I thought the ad’s were pushing it (i only say this as a white american, and that is to say I cannot possibly say how it would of made me feel had i been black, so i am merely guessing at this point). In either case, I thought the ads were very well done. Oh and Breigh, please send me the pic you used on 25peeps…I cannot recall what pics goto what links, I didn’t mean to exclude you :) I was having template issues with blogger as well, bah! :)
I think we’d all be better off if we didn’t take ourselves so seriously. Maybe learn to laugh at ourselves. I’m sure the Sony ads were intended to be cute and funny. Most probably saw them that way. But I hate to think that we have to live in some bleached out world where we’re second guessing our thoughts because someone may interpret them incorrectly.
I’m surprised they would do this. I would think that controversry would be a good thing – there’s no such thing as bad publicity right? This is probably just another step in their plan. There’s no way that they would have pulled the ads because they were afraid of offending people. I mean, was there no one at the sony offices who realized the ads could be controversal? They knew what they were doing. Gah, maybe I’m just being pessimistic again.
It’s funny actually, because I met him at the airport while I was waiting for Xander to fly in from Amsterdam when we met for the first time. He was waiting for someone to get off the same flight :) This was in June 1999, before he got mega popularity from 24
Replying to your comment: Yes! We must get Firefly back on TV! I know it’s less likely than getting a sequal (or, what I hear, a hypothetical trilogy) but with a new season at least we’d get more episodes! Not just a two hour movie! But then it’d be lower budget… I guess we just can’t win. But we’ll take anything we can get! I always say when I win the lottery I’m going to personally fund Firefly to come back on the air *kicks exec.s* take that, Fox!

Yeah I’m pretty sure that’s why the ads were here in the Netherlands rather than back in North America, because they knew that the Dutch wouldn’t give a shit. Sadly, the Americans picked up on it from way over there and decided to take issue, even though the billboards are an ocean away, they are still offended by it hehe. Silliness.
I thought they were being pretty oversensitive, too–I never saw the ad here in the States.
