My Dietician

She’s mine and I want to keep her forever.

When I was younger, I guess probably somewhere between 17-19 I decided I wanted to try to lose weight (wish I had stuck with it, as I had a lot less to lose then!). I was forwarded to a dietician in my hometown and didn’t like her at all. I hated everything she had to say and I felt terrible when I left.

Today I saw a dietician for the 2nd time in my life, and she was absolutely lovely. Funny thing was, she said many of the same things the other dietician said. I guess it all boils down to how motivated you are to do something and what your level of comittment is. I was ready to hear it all this time, I wanted to hear it.. I want the guidance and support and it makes all the difference in the world.

She’s a young woman, I’d try to guess her age but I’d probably be wrong so I’ll make a broad range and say from mid 20’s to mid 30’s and she was very friendly. She was quite surprised that I’d lost almost 15 lbs in the time between when my fertility specialist referred me to her and actually getting in to see her. I, of course, sat up and beamed because I must admit.. I’m pretty stoked about it myself!

She asked me a lot of questions about what I eat. What I usually have for breakfast, lunch and dinner, what I eat for snacks, what I drink and she asked if I smoke or drink alcohol. After getting all of my info I think we were both surprised when she informed me that my problem at the moment is UNDEREATING. After explaining to her all the things I’d cut out of my diet and what I’ve been eating on a day to day basis, she was very impressed. Although it would appear I’ve overdone it… I’ve cut back TOO much on what I’m eating.

Over the next two weeks I have to write down everything I eat, and see her again on August 10th. Then she will look into it in more depth and make sure I’m getting all the vitimiins and minerals that I need. One thing I need to do in the meantime is try to eat more bread.. either brown bread, rice, pasta, cereal or whatever. I’d been cutting back on that quite a lot and she told me it wasn’t healthy. I’m sure the Atkins-aholics would disagree, but I’m going with the professional on this one.

So, overall it was a great visit. I weighed in the same there as I did at home, 14 lbs down from my starting weight 8 weeks ago.

What I really liked about her though, was that she gave me her phone number and email address and told me if I have any questions about foods, need info on anything or just need some motivation that I can phone or email her anytime. I think that’s pretty cool… I’m already looking forward to seeing her again on the 10th and finding out how I can change my eating habits to something a bit more well balanced.

It sure is weird having someone telling me to eat MORE though. Can’t say I’ve ever had that happen before!

  1. Oh yeah keeping a food diary is the key, at least starting out. Enter EVERYTHING and then check what you are eating on average on a daily basis Lately I’ve been lazy about my food diary, I’ll track one day and then skip a few.

I look forward to reading more entries on this. :)

  2. as someone who’s dropped 54 lbs in the last six months, i can attest to the truth of comment # 1… anyone can lose the weight, you just have to stick to a diet, for me it was slim fast, and normal dinners(yes it does work) and you’ve got to work out every day. something that tests your endurance. i like rollerblading and the exercise bike. also, youve got to have willpower and a good attitude. the weight will drop eventually. if you get down on yourself , you wont get anywhere battling the bulge.

  3. Theo – Hey awesome I’ll try to make that. I generally love all chicken dishes. It’s like the meat that goes with everything!

Maybe I should make a post asking people for their favorite healthy recipes. I wonder if people would post any.

Dutchbitch – 25 kilos?! Wow!!! I’d love to see some before and afters!

Jessica – I have the same thing with medication. I’m on Paroxetine (Paxil) and it definately works against me for trying to lose weight. :/

Sway – you are evillllll :P

  4. Discard the last line of my previous comment. Numbnuts forgot to post what the frigging recipe is called:

(Relatively) Healthy zingy crispy chicken dippers!

  5. Ingredients:
    2 skinless chicken breasts
    2 pieces wholemeal bread
    2 tsp Paprika
    1 tsp Garlic Powder
    1 tsp Chilli Powder
    Olive oil
    1-2 egg whites

    Method:

    Preheat the oven to 200C.

Lightly toast 2 pieces of wholemeal bread under the grill and blitz up in a blender.
Empty into a bowl and mix in the garlic powder, paprika and chilli powder.
Discarding the yolks, break the eggs into another clean bowl.
Whisk the egg whites until frothy.

Cut the chicken breasts into cubes – aim for around 8 cubes per breast.
Dip a cube into the egg whites, then roll around until well covered in the breadcrumbs.
Place on a grill rack on top of an oven tray.

Drizzle olive oil over the chicken pieces and bung it in the oven for 15 minutes.

Take them out of the oven after 15 minutes and cut into one of the pieces to check if they’re ready. If not, put them back in for another 5 minutes, whilst keeping a close eye on them.

Take them out and serve with a green salad, and an onion and tomato dip.

    Serves 2 people.

Alternatively, you could put the chicken strips in a wholemeal pitta bread with curly leaf lettuce and a squeeze of lemon.

    Am I awesome?

  6. I second that: Good 4 U! I lost 25 kg over the past 2 years and I feel great! If I can do it, I am sure anyone can!

  7. Hey! Good for you! I hope it works out; I’d think you could only lose more considering you’ve already lost 15 pounds on your own!! I have no doubt she was impressed, it tells her you have determination. The best of luck and let us know how it’s going! (btw: your tag/category for those post almost made tea come out my nose XD)
I’m going on vacation to Hawaii in a month and a half, and I’m trying to use the time as best I can to slim down. Its much easier when you have a goal *glares at bathing suit*

HAHAH I’m glad I act as your own personal TV drug dealer! If I must be an addict, I’m taking all of you down with me! XD Tell me what you think of Psych!!

  8. Hi Breigh – Yes it is a small world! Cool to see another Canadian female in the Diet. I peeped you also! cheers!

And I’ve actually visited a nutritionist also. You post sounds a little bit like what my nutritionist recommended for me too. Eating a little more and spreading it out over the day is what I’m doing. I had put on roughly 35 pounds in three months due to not excercising and certain medication that I was taking.

Good luck with your diet. I have subscribed to your blog also.

    :)

PS – I hope we both beat out the boob pics on 25peeps. lol.

  9. I’ve thought about going to a dietician, but I’ve done the “write everything down” thing and the only thing that has worked for me is not eating and working out really friggin’ hard.

    Keep us posted…
