One of the hard parts of being on a diet (I hate using that word) is trying to keep variety in regards to food, at least for me. I tend to stick to the same things I know I like because I often don’t like cooking or trying new things. Mostly because I hate when they don’t come out the way I want them to. I had that this morning with this Baked Bananas recipe I found on a Weight Watchers recipe blog last night.
I love bananas and can easily eat 2-3 of them per day, especially now that they have been given a 0 points value with the new WW system here in NL. They are great to grab to fill you up a bit when you are feeling peckish. So I thought this may be a nice way to get a bit of a change in. I thought well I love honey, cinnamon and bananas, so if you put them all together then it must be a hit, right?
WRONG.
I made them as directed, one banana for myself and one for Xander, 5g of honey per banana and a shake of cinnamon. Then I tossed them in the oven and waited. They came out slightly golden colored and looked good, but once I got a piece in my mouth I really wasn’t feeling the love. All I was feeling was… mush.
Maybe it’s just me being weird over texture, or perhaps having them on their own wasn’t a good idea, but I can’t imagine what would have made this better for me. The bananas got so soft that even though the taste was ok, it disgusted me. Also, adding things like ice cream or oatmeal makes the point value go up, which would defeat the purpose of why I tried it to begin with.
Such a pity because with only a value of 1 point for the honey, I thought it would have made for an interesting snack alternative to just the ‘on the run’ banana I usually have.
I would just write them off as disgusting, except for the fact that my husband quite liked them. So much so that he ate the rest of mine after I decided I didn’t like them. So it’s very likely that it is just my personal dislike for mushy banana. I do like the deep fried bananas you get with Chinese food here, so I don’t dislike all soft bananas obviously.
When asked to rate them from 1-10, Xander gave them a 7 and suggested that they may be better if we used the Indonesian bananas that are often used for cooking and baking, as they stay slightly more firm. I’m not sure I care enough to try at this point. I think this one is a write off!
If you had photographed them in a more compromising position you could have actually sent them to the FailBlog… baked banana fail.

Thanks for visiting! :) I do miss Canada a lot, but I am not as miserable and homesick as I was when I first came here. Thankfully that has gotten a lot better. It will always be my home though!
I hate any form of cooked banana! So much so that I always check when I’m ordering french toast to make sure they’re not going to grill the banana. One time I didn’t ask they actually served them still in the skin, now black and nasty looking, ew. Then, the last two times I asked and they said yes, I asked them not to grill the BANANA. And both cafe staff (in two different cities!) said ‘um….. we can’t serve you raw BACON’. Seriously, what kind of freak would eat raw bacon? And am I the only person who ever asks about the banana? Very odd! Sorry yours didn’t work out either :(
haha what on earth does bacon have to do with anything? That would frustrate the heck out of me!
What about a plantain? I think I saw them in Makro in a two pack and labeled as gebak-banaan. I don’t know how many points those would be… But those are meant to be eaten cooked. You have to wait until they are rather ripe, and you can toss them in the oven with butter. Or you can cook them in a pan with some cinnamon and sugar (I guess honey could work?) and make like a dessert type thing. They are quite delicious, and not mushy if they are not over ripe. :)
Yeah I think that’s sort of what my husband was thinking about too, the bananas that are meant for baking. I may try it again one day if he decides he really wants to try it again, otherwise I’m not really bothered.
I hate when a recipe I have high hopes for turns out so disappointing. Sadly, I can’t think of any banana recipes to suggest, either.

I think I’m going to stick to just eating them normal, or if I do cook them just do it in something like banana loaf. Bananas aren’t meant to be messed with I think!
