Steve Irwin is dead.
If you are like me, you’re probably saying? Who?!. At least that’s what I said when I woke up this morning and Xander told me the news. Not many people really know him by his real name, when xander said ‘The crocodile hunter guy’, it immediately hit me.
Wow… the first thing I thought of was his family. He has a wife and two small children who were left behind… Not to mention all the people who are involved in his shows, his zoo and so on. How heartbreaking it must be for them.
So many people found him irritating, but I loved this guy. He loved animals and devoted his entire life to them… He has seen and done things that most of the rest of us will never do and has done a lot for the protection of wild animals.
From CNN.com
Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.
Irwin, 44 was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.
It’s true, he was killed doing what he loved most… observing wildlife. The story is all over the news and as shocking as it is, I don’t think anyone is surprised to hear that he died in this way… he risked his life every day doing what he does, and he knew the chances of something like this happening.
How very sad.
I never really found him irritating at all. His shows were always both educational and entertaining, and I spent many an hour parked in front of the television watching “The Crocodile Hunter” in action.
Even with all the crazy stunts he pulled over the years, many of which had me cringing and denouncing him as a crazed fool, I developed a degree of respect for how firmly he seemed to believe in what he was doing.
CRIKEY! We’ll miss you Steve…
So, does it make me a bad person for finding the whole thing sorta funny? You’re making a video about dangerous sea creatures and get killed by something in a freak accident that rarely kills humans? It’s like sky diving enthusiasts getting in a plane crash…
At least he didn’t have his baby with him this time.
first off all you beat me to the post and a much better one at the news at that. Secondly congrats on still being on 25peeps…quite an impressive run, and without stooping to boobage too…incredibly impressive :)
Hopefully instead of sending flowers people will make donations to his zoo and the like. Poor Steve :(
I have to agree, this was a sad thing to have happen, so sad that I couldn’t bring my mean-assed self to make fun of it. I’m wondering how many bloggers will make fun though–Irwin was often parodied and lampooned.
I couldn’t believe it when I heard this morning. Gawd, I’ve followed his programs for nearly 20 years. I always said he’d be killed one of these days.. and now this.
Apparently he was swimming over the top of the Stingray when it shot a barb that pierced his heart. He was in the middle of filming a childrens TV show, that his daughter was also going to star in.
Such a tragic event, and my heart goes out to his wife and 2 young children.
Shit! I didn’t know about it until I read it over here… sad…
I thought he was entertaining. As a reptile keeper I wasn’t always happy with the kinds of things that he did- he did a lot of risky things that if they went wrong would probably have ended up giving reptiles and even worse reputation in peoples minds than they already have- but I liked him, and his wife.
I always kind of thought that something bad might happen to him – bad injury or say a bite from a poisonous snake, and that he might die young, but I always thought it would be a reptile that would get him.
I feel bad for his wife and kids. She’s an American. I wonder if she’s stay in Australia and continue his and his families work, or if she’s go back to the US?
oh know what a thing to happen and the yes the family he left behind. Though just like it was said he died doing something he loved and knew the dangers of doing it.
It’s all a Sting!
The crocs couldn’t get him so they set up a conspiracy with this Ray to take him out! ;~d
