This is how we started ringing the New Year this year. Looking through a rainy window wondering if we want to go outside or not.
It wasn’t freezing cold like the last few years, it was actually surprisingly warm (about 11 degrees Celsius), but it looked generally nasty outside.
I was so disappointed… the fireworks is one of the things I look forward to most during the holidays and I wasn’t sure it was going to happen.
I seriously underestimated the Dutch though. Like a little rain was going to stop them! I love how much the Nederlanders LOVE their fireworks!
Even with the rain I was able to get a few decent photos from our balcony.
I got some video footage as well but there are a few things you need to know before watching it:
- I’ll never have a career in the film industry.
- It was windy as heck AND raining.
- My camera apparently doesn’t catch fireworks far away.
- I sometimes forget I’m filming and I swear.
I wish the film had come out better. At times when there were loads of fireworks going off a little in the distance all I saw on the screen was blackness. Maybe it was the rain or something…
The rain did stop after a while and the fireworks got really revved up, by that time we were sick of running from one balcony to the other and I’d already filled up the camera with pics (which turned out to be 90% shit) so we just watched them through the windows while sitting around in the house. They were still going strong at almost 2am when we finally went to bed. Thank god for our earplugs!
By about 12:30am this is what the air was like. I guess that’s what you can expect when there are thousands and thousands of fireworks going off all over the city.
It was almost hard to breathe when we were outside and the neighbourhood fireworks were going off because the wind seemed to carry all the smoke right towards us.
It was worth it though!
Hey, this sounds just like New Year’s Eve in Denmark! It must be a Northern Europe thing….

Here ( at Voorhout , near Leiden ) it went on until about 2 too and , also we, went to bed. I can still hear the drunk people yelling around that time, hehe !
Here we had a lot of fireworks … it was better than last year.
Yeah. I am thinking about living in an EU state once I get my Canadian citizenship. That would be a pretty cool way to learn a new language and immerse yourself in the culture.
Humm, come to think of it, living in Japan would be a better option for me.

Sorry the fireworks weren’t as good this year. That was one of my favorite things about the holidays in NL too. I never even bothered to look outside last night as our neighbours put off a few, they are always pathetic around here, can’t buy anything decent to explode. :)
