Our house is in shambles, I’m going out of my mind. Not that I’m normally a stellar housekeeper but this is just beyond. Our fridge is in our bedroom, our stove is in the spare room, our washer is in the hallway. Our livingroom (in this pic) pretty much holds everything else. On the plus side, it makes getting a drink in the night easier… just roll out of bed and you’re right in front of the fridge.
Here’s how the kitchen looked this morning:
We had to paint it last night with this yellow stuff to prepare it to be plastered today. The stuff smells terrible and gets quite sticky as it dries… but it didn’t take long to do since you don’t really have to make it look pretty. The only areas that are being plastered is where the tiles go behind the cupboards and the areas I want straightened out and flattened (without that weird rugged texture that is on the walls now) so I can paint.
Some good and bad news – I finally decided on the tiles I want, Yay! Bad news is they won’t be in for three weeks… DOH! They are ‘Flagstone White’ by Casa Dolce Casa in Italy and I think they are sooo pretty. They will look lovely with the vanilla color of our kitchen. I took a closer up photo of the tiles in the shop yesterday.
I love them! Shame that they won’t be in for 3 weeks after the kitchen is put together but it’ll be worth waiting for. Plus, that will give me time to paint without having to worry about getting paint on the tiles.
Kitchen will be installed tomorrow… can’t wait!
Where are the critters during all this??? If your cats are anything like mine, they insist on “supervising” or “helping”!
The white thing hanging in the kitchen is our water boiler. It’s really common here in Europe to have them in the kitchen like that. It’s what we get all our hot water from. I hate it, and I hate that it’s in the kitchen but we really have no other place for it to go. It’s 50 liters and if one of us has a long shower (long being about 15+ minutes) then the other has to set the water heater to heat up for a half hour so we have enough for a 2nd shower.
Hmmm… I remember those days well. We redid our kitchen in 2004 and did 95% of the work ourselves (just had someone come in to do the plastering) and our house was a shambles for over 3 months. We were doing microwave meals for 3 months as well since that was the only thing we had… no kitchen sink either so it was paper plates or washing up in the bathroom.
It will be soooooooo worth it when it’s done.

It looks like a shambles but just think about your nice new beautiful kitchen you will have. It will be soooooo nice. What is the white hanging thing above where your cupboards used to be?
