The Wii Ain’t For Me

This past weekend Xander and I went to visit our friends Penny and Yuri.  They are housesitting for Yuri’s boss here in Rotterdam and it’s been great having them so close.  They live in Roosendaal, about a 35-40 minute drive from us, so we get together once every 1-2 weeks if we are lucky.

The place they are housesitting is like a mansion.  Well, a Dutch city version of one anyway.  It has 5 floors and really huge rooms, two massive kitchens, beautiful bathrooms and all the cool techy shit you could want… including the new Nintendo Wii.

Xander Playing Wii

Xander will never be a tennis pro.

Xander & Yuri

Neither of the boys were really that into it either.

Me Concentrating!I only played Zelda and didn’t quite get the point.  You don’t even have to stand up, that’s not very Wii-like.   I thought you’d have to jump and swing and be all fighty as if you WERE the little Zelda dude but it was like playing it on any other game console.  Meh.

The game looked nice but it reminded me a lot of Fable.  Not really worth spending all that money on a Wii.  At least not in my opinion anyway.

Note the frustrated look on my face.  I was concentrating really hard trying to get these damn sheep into a barn, but it took me a min to realize I had to go to the guy first to get it to work so I spent about 15 minutes trying to herd them when there was no chance of it working.

Farty Baby

On the way home we were behind this bus.  I burst out laughing because it looks like the kid is lifting up to let out a big fart.

  1. Although I felt the same way when I tried a Wii for the first time (also at a friend’s place), it wasn’t until I got my own Wii and some different games that I realized that it’s not the Wii’s fault if it isn’t so special, it’s the fault of the games and how they’ve been designed. The game desigers are the ones who decide how to make use of the physically interactive qualities of the Wii. So this means some games are great on the Wii, and others are not (and very much like you said “Bleh, how does this really differ”). And remember these games are made by other companies, not Nintendo.

But the Wii -really- opened up once I bought a Wii Balance Board. With it came Nintendo’s own fitness software which was so much more fun in itself than the commercial games I’d been playing with the Wii controllers, but it got really good with games like “Shaun White Snowboarding”. Really, really fun and got me in a sweat!

  2. I love the wii. :) I think the best game so far that really uses the controls is Rayman, Raving Rabbits. It’s funny and it’s crazy. Too much fun.

Zelda is still RPG, so the only things I was expecting to use the controls for on that were any mini games it has.

Super Paper mario is like that as well, except there are times when you have to point at the screen to get past things, etc. It’s just a different use of the controller really.

Pool is a pretty cool game as well.
