A few weeks ago I received a package with some new yarn from Scheepjes. It’s an addition to their Soft Fun line, called Soft Fun Denim and it comes in the following colors:
SCHEEPJES SOFT FUN DENIM DETAILS
Blend: 60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic
Yarn Weight: DK
Length: 140m
Ball Weight: 50g
Gauge: 21 stitches, 30 rows to 10cm on 4.00mm needles
Needle Size: 4.00mm
When it arrived, I pretty much ransacked the box. Taking photos of the balls of yarn still pretty and intact was the farthest thing from my mind, I was far too busy mixing, matching and thinking of ideas of what to make with it. By the time I was through, the balls were a mess. It looked like a cat had gotten at them! I couldn’t help myself, though… It was so squishy and soft and new. You’d have done the same darn thing.
I did still attempt to get a ‘real life’ photos for you, by stuffing them into a basket and trying to make them look as though I hadn’t mangled them to death already.
I had a few ideas of what I wanted to make, and the more I fussed about playing with the yarn, swatching and fondling, the more complicated my ideas became. There was only one problem… I was fresh off the back of finishing another project that was one of my most difficult yet and deep down all I really wanted was something simple. I love large, intricate and challenging projects, but in between I really need projects that are more relaxing.
I decided to look for a nice shawl pattern, so I could take it with me on our upcoming cruise. I wanted something with a simple design, that I could knit up while relaxing and watching TV, but that still looked interesting. I found a project I think I’m really going to like but it’s a bit early to tell just yet. I decided to go for colors I don’t use a lot, as I have a tendency to gravitate towards wine, navy, dark green and other fall-ish colors. I felt like a change and went for something lighter…
It’s so strange, up until a few years ago I was not a fan of pink at all (except for the artist), but I seem to have come full circle with it. I love pink now, and this combination of the soft pink and grey thrills me to bits. It’s just so pretty, don’t you think? You can see that the yarn has lovely stitch detail as well, which I really like. It’s going to be essential for the next part of the pattern.
Anyway, I just started it and haven’t gotten to the interesting part of the design that made me love the pattern just yet, but I already love the feel of it. I used a 4.5mm needle, which gives it a really loose, soft and squishy feel. Hence the “Squishy Soft Fun Denim Shawl” name. When I am a little farther in and know it’s working out the way I wanted it to I will post more photos and info on the pattern!

I know what you mean about pink. I’m still not too sure, but I think it works with bolder colors, definitely. And I am not jealous of your cruise… at all ;-)
