Today Xander had to go in to the office for a few minutes. He is on a new project with the government in Dordrecht and the first day he was there he went to hunt and gather for lunch. He phoned me telling me that there was a quilt shop around the corner, and a deli with import items up the road.
You can bet your ass I went with him this time.
Oh yeah BABY!!!! As I’m typing this I keep stopping to pick up the Crunchie bar and have a nibble on it. To those of you in Canada and the US, this seems like nothing but to me, here in Holland it’s such a rare treat. An expensive one as well, which makes it extra rare.
I was especially excited to find Juicy Fruit gum, because it reminds me of my dad. One thing you can pretty much always count on is that he has Juicy Fruit in his pocket. Even now, I haven’t opened it yet but I can smell it in my mind and it takes me back to when I was a kid. That package is going to last me a while! I’ll have to do like dad did when I was little and rip the sticks of gum in half.
I think if someone had ever told me there would be a day when I’d actually RATION Juicy Fruit I’d think they were nuts… but it’s not all that bad. It’s not like there is no food over here in the Netherlands, it’s just different.
I’m sure there are Dutchies in Canada who would KILL for some Dutch Drop right about now!
Hey… maybe we should hook up and do an exchange! I supply the drop, you supply the Reese’s Pieces!
Hey, I’m going to be in Dordrecht next week, do you remember where that store was? I’d love to go get some cake mix!
I don’t live in the US, so most of those things I don’t normally eat here. I recently went on holidays to the Netherlands, though and I’m terribly missing stroopwafels. I want some sooo bad. Do you like them? I’d kill somebody for a stroopwafel in Venezuela! LOL.
Ahhh, I understand that completely! I miss Reese’s PBC too! And Caramilk. And Crispy Crunch! Can’t wait to taste those again. Of course I’d kill for some triple salt drop too… yum. I remember I tried to bake a cake when at relatives in Holland (but it was years ago), and they didn’t have the basics for baking a cake!
I am definitely going to want to check out that store. I hope you wrote down the address…

Melissa / Paule – Next time I have plans to see you girls I’ll get Xander to run me over to those shops again and I’ll pick some stuff up for ya’s :) Just remind me cuz you know I’ll forget!
Melissa D – What are you missing from Holland, lets do a swap!!
Sonya – Yeah I have no idea why they don’t have chocolate chips here, that blows my mind. It seems like one of those things that would be everywhere, but go figure. They probably think we can just break up a Milka bar or something if we want bits of chocolate badly enough. As for the peanut butter chips, I think that’s a pipe dream for sure. We’re lucky we even have peanut butter haha
Stephanie – Thank GOD mom and dad are coming over next month. She’s already got a list of stuff to bring over!
Lori – They do eat pancakes here but they eat it with something called ‘Stroop’ (said like strope). It’s basically just molasses. There is no maple syrup here except for in import shops, so all us expats have to stock up when we can!
Gimme gimme. Flake! One of my favourites. I’m so jealous!
I do understand needing your “fix”. I had a fit when I saw Good n Plenty candies at Bulk Barn. One thing though: I noticed you bought pancake syrup. I think of that as being pretty universal. Do they not have that in Holland? I thought everyone ate pancakes, or at the very least, waffles.
haha glad you found some things there from “home” in Canada. i think someone needs a care package for the holidays!
Whoo Hoo..you got some GREAT stuff! While I was at the american food store in Amsterdam I bought some reeces aswell. I wish they would get chocolate and peanutbutter chips to bake with here. Enjoy your loot:)

I would love to have one of those flake bars you have there, they don’t sale them here anywhere anymore. :(
And I understand completely, the stuff was expensive but you buy it anyway. I used to do the same thing, and then ration it out to make it last longer. hmmm maybe we can start an exchange, there are a few things I miss from Holland myself, not the drop though. :)
Melissa Ds last blog post… I am so mad I could spit.
Your SOOO lucky Breigh, the best thing I found last week was Nestles Chocolate Quick powder.

Right on! Yummy stash!
I recently bought a multi-pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum in Germany at a store Kaufland [http://www.kaufland.de/Site/start.htm]. I’ve been rationing it..
And my maple syrup is running out, rapidly! I need to restock. Stat! ;)
