Mamma Mia! Meh.

mammamia

Yesterday while working on some crafts I watched the movie Mamma Mia.  I’d been wanting to see this movie but had a hellish time getting there.  My friend Penny doesn’t like musicals, my husband would rather hand over his left testicle on a plate than see it and everyone else either wasn’t into it or we had trouble sorting out our schedules.

So I downloaded it.

I seem to have trouble with musicals in general, with the exception of a few like Grease, Grease 2 (I AM NOT ASHAMED!), and The Little Mermaid to which I know every word.

I made it through about 20 minutes of Chicago, 30 minutes of Moulin Rouge and don’t even get me started on that damn Dancer in the Dark.  I thought I would be able to sit through Mamma Mia the whole way though, I mean I like Abba, I love Meryl Streep.  I love a good chick flick!

I did make it all the way through but the movie annoyed me and I fast forwarded a lot of the singing and dancing.   I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as I thought I would and I’m pretty sure I’m joining Penny in the ranks of the haters of all things musical (except Grease).

The only musical parts I really enjoyed in it was the very beginning and very end when Sophie is singing “I have a dream” and the part where Meryl Streep sang “The Winner Takes it All” (which made me cry, I think I’m hormonal).   Otherwise I could have done without every bit of the music, especially the parts where Pierce Brosnan was singing.  I’m thinking he was put in for extra eye candy because whenever he sang I cringed… it was like he was in pain.

One other thing I hated was Christine Baranski.  I linked to her because I’m sure every single one of you are thinking “Who?!” and have to click the link to see.   What in the heck was she doing in this movie?  Ok, I get it… she does fit the bill with the whole semi-skanky, plastic surgery freak but bleeeeeh.  I can’t stand this actress.  I have hated her in every single thing I’ve seen her in.  Remember her as that annoying friend on Cybil?

So yeah, I’m torn. Other than the singing I loved the story, loved the three guys, loved Meryl Streep and especially loved Amanda Seyfried playing Sophie.   I would have loved to see a non-musical version with the same people minus the Cybil bitch.

Oh and the scenery, I loved the scenery.  If it weren’t for all that climbing I could move to where they live and die happy.

No wait, they’d have to have internet too.  I’d have to be ON THE LINE.

  1. I was just talking to a friend recently about Mamma Mia. I didn’t see the show that was touring around some years ago, but everyone I know who went loved it. I don’t think I’d like the film, though, even though I really like Meryl Streep and she has the ability to carry a film.

I saw “Chicago” in New York City before the movie came out and it was fantastic — the film version is lacklustre by comparison. It’s like watching a movie after you’ve read the book, always a disappointment.

I’m quite picky about musicals (David loved them, his favourite was “Music Man”) — when I lived in Australia “Grease” was playing 24/7 everywhere and it drove me insane — but I think the best place to see them is live on stage, not the cinema.

  2. I loved Grease as a teens, as well as Dirty Dancing. Well, a young teen, must have been 12-13 yrs old…

I didn’t see Mamma Mia because just seeing the trailer on TV for about a month after the release was annoying enough.

  3. When my son was 13 (about 10 years ago), his grade 8 class saw Singing in the Rain. Amazingly, they LOVED it even though it’s over 50 years old. They walked around for weeks saying, “I caaaiiiin’t staiind ‘im!!” mimicking the diva character!

And it really does stand the test of time…with the corniness overshadowed by a sly satire of the Hollywood system…Kind of a foreshadowing of Hairspray and Grease in a way, as it makes fun of a moment in history; in this case, the beginning of talkie movies in the early 1930s…

And the dancing, of course, is amazing.

  4. My girlfriend has been trying to get me to see this one for months now, and this just confirms my “no” hehe.

Chickflicks certainly isn’t for me :P

  5. I really want to see Wicked! While in England we are going to see Chicago and I have a feeling I wont like it to much because of the Jazz music. Im a BIG fan of Grease..wich comes on tonight by the way and I really wanted to see Cats before they closed the show.

  6. I haven’t seen it, it looked like too good of a story line to be ruined by music! I think maybe it’s one of those ones you have to see on the big screen with an enthusiastic audience, not a great sit at home and relax kind of a movie. And it’s also a love it or hate it kind of thing too… so I figured I’d stay on the fence and not see it!

  7. Even when they advertised with the commercials, I made sure to stear clear. Practically any movie that involves singing, I treat like the plague. Everyones gonna get it and Im running the opposite direction. lol

  8. Hi,
    Here via Blog365.

I’m a guy. Loved the stage version. See it before you totally give up. Only liked the movie because I remembered the play.

So aside from the singing (which is all ABBA) you didn’t like this musical? Psshyeah, the singing sucked. They had no singers. They were actors.

See the play. 100 times better.

Oh, and one more thing? You should never judge a movie WHILE YOU ARE WORKING ON CRAFTS!!! :)

(And your comment luv thingy is about six posts behind!)

Other than that, have a nice day!
    :) :) :)

  9. I dislike all musicals except The Sound of Music. No movie can beat that classical film.

  10. I saw this one also.. well .. ok.. I fast forwarded most of it and prayed that it would end. The chick that played the other friend (not Christine Baranski) annoyed me to no end. I like Christine in Chicago though.

  11. I had no idea you loved The Little Mermaid! One of my favorite movies, and there ain’t NOTHING wrong with any of the Grease Movies heheh

  12. I love musicals!! and i really enjoyed Mamma mia and i’ve bought almost every musical that has come out in the last little while. Mamma Mia is great if you can get past Pierce Brosnan and his singing and shiny teeth haha

  13. Omg I totally forgot about Hairspray! Yes I did like that movie. I LOVED John Travolta in it too! Although, once again I did find myself wishing there was less singing and dancing. I loved the story though!

  14. Hairspray? Not necessarily the John Travolta one (which is okay, but too much musical and not enough movie imho…you need some down time from the big numbers, I think) but the original Rikki Lake one…Very quirky. I liked that a girl with meat on her bones could be popular and get the cute guy…
