I have a question for all of you… What do browser do you use, and why do you prefer that one?
The reason I’m asking is because I use Firefox and it’s starting to bug me how things are always missing. When I visit websites I never know if I’m getting the full site or not.
Let me show you…
Do you see the difference? At the top only one the “*Rent* DvD” tab is showing on Firefox, rather than the tabs for all the different sections. Also the Amazon.co.uk logo is missing from the top. I’m sure there are other differences as you look through the site, but these are the ones that are most noticable when first visiting.
I love Firefox mainly because I couldn’t imagine not having tabbed browsing. I always have at least 5 tabs going in my browser at once and I wouldn’t want to use another browser that would require a seperate window for each one. I’m not sure I can stand these constant errors that I get on websites due to using Firefox though.
I also get it a fair bit when I’m signing up for things. I notice sections of applications or forms missing and when I right click and choose “View this page with IE”, there they are!
Tonight I heard IE being described as a spyware collecting heap of nuts and bolts, but am not sure how much truth there is to it. I didn’t really mind IE when I used it and the only reason I switched to Firefox was because someone waved the tabbed browsing under my nose.
Opinions? I’d like some input on this browser situation… Do the rest of you Firefox users experience this as well? Will Microsoft ever wisen up and give IE tabbed browsing?
** UPDATE ** After reading the comments I turned off my ADBLOCK extension in Firefox and the problem has been solved!! Thanks for the tips!
I used Firefox and Opera. IE only as a last resort for website that absolutely require it (and so far that is just the windowsupdate.microsoft.com site).
Firefox is my one true love :D It’s funny you ask that, I’m actually working on a post for all the programs/apps. I use and why, I should finish it soon…
Concerning your Amazon plugin question: I actually mentioned it at the very end of this post: http://cellardoor.another-place.org/wp/?p=493 exactly because I figured someone would ask sometime :P It’s a GREAT plugin (although, the functions can be a pain and, like most stuff with WP, you must work out the bugs) it’s called AMM, heres the link: http://www.sozu.co.uk/software/amm/
As I said in my update, the problem appears to be the Adblock extension!! Thanks for the tips everyone :)
Also, as Tanya said … All Hail Darryn! I’m totally going to get that IE Tab extension!
I use firefox, but I’m curious as to what I have been missing. We’ll see.
I use firefox bc like you, I need the tabs.
What shits me is that certain webpages DO NOT WORK in firefox as well as they do in IE. My school’s intranet will NOT send a message in firefox, but works fine in IE. *grumble*
May try the IE Tab extension. All Hail Darryn!
I use firefox. It is the shit.
the next version of IE, IE7, has tabbed browsing. You can also get tabbed browsing in IE by installing the MSN toolbar. There are also a few browsers that are shells over IE, such as Maxthon, which is pretty good.
If you just want to be able to use firefox mostly, and sometimes IE, get an extension called “IE Tab”. It puts a little icon in your stuts bar and if you click it it will sue IE to render the page *within that tab in firefox*. So you don’t have to laod IE at all. I love it, and everyone I evangelise it to loves it. You can set it so that certain pages always load in an IE tab.
I have used FireFox for almost two years and have never had a problem like that. Check your Extensions. Are you running Adblock or Flashblock or anything similar that might be removing content? That is very weird. Do you have the latest version of Firefox?
IE 7 (which is currently in beta) does have tabbed browsing. However, from all the results of the beta so far, you probably won’t want to switch from FF. IE is indeed very unsecure (although much better if you have all the latest patches).
One other reason many people voice their hate for the browser is its lack of support for web standards such as CSS. Ask any web developer, IE makes it 10 times harder to create websites that look the same among different browsers simply because they do not follow the official standards of house a browser should render webpages.
I’m a mac user, but I use windows too. But mainly for browsing I use safari. I used to use Firefox, but it’s way too slow for me.
On my pc however, I use IE 7. IE 7 has tabbed browsing, and it works pretty well. I’m sure there’s about a million reasons not to use IE 7 since it’s beta, but hey, it works, it’s faster than firefox on my pc (yes it’s true), and well, it has tabbed browsing. That’s why I use it.
But your issue with the amazon.co.uk with firefox. I have to admit that’s bizarre. I decided to look to see what it looks like for me, and sure enough, the site is pretty identical to IE…I’m wondering if you have some extensions or something in your firefox install that would possibly make it go wonky?
Don’t give up on firefox just yet.:)
