You know how they say that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure? I’ve been learning the validity of that statement ever since a second hand shop moved in across the road from our house. Every so often I pop in there to see what’s new or if anything catches my eye and more often than not something does.
I keep seeing signs that I am becoming more and more Dutch. Whether it’s a change in attitude in regards to the way they do things, learning to appreciate riding a bike or saving a few pennies, over time I’ve truly become Canadutch. Neither purely Canadian nor purely Dutch, but an odd mixture of the two.
Today I almost squealed with glee when I found this little gem.
It’s a wicker suitcase. Looks pretty boring huh? Just all wicker and… wicker. Don’t be fooled though, when you open it up it holds a surprise!
A cute red gingham interior! I don’t think this would be entirely difficult to make if you had the suitcase, some fabric and a glue gun, but this was already made. Someone else did the work and it could be all mine for the low price of €1,50! How could I resist, it was BIJNA GRATIS!! See, there’s that Dutchie in me sneaking out again, that means almost free. If I had clogs I’d be dancing in them!
The minute I laid eyes on it I knew exactly what it was meant for. What it’s purpose in my life would be…
CRAFT CASE!!! Omgomgomg! How cute is this thing?
As we walked home I explained excitedly to my husband how it can accompany us on all our travels, stuffed to the brim with crafty goodness, just waiting for me to crack it open and start working on something new. It’s going to be like my very own crafting TICKLE TRUNK!! If you weren’t a kid in Canada somewhere between the 60’s and 90’s, click the link. Don’t get excited, it’s not as dirty as it sounds.
It was definitely €1,50 well spent!
Your very own Tickle Trunk! God, I *LOVED* Mister Dressup. I always wanted to draw like that, too.

It makes me giddy when I find something cool like this for so cheap. The place is literally across the street… talk about handy!
That is so cute!!
In Ontario (don’t know if it is the same all across Canada), if you had ANY trash you didn’t want – you just send it to the curb. Whether it be a bike or a couch, a swing set or bed – someone was always sure to stop and pick it up. My father was the KING of the Trash Pickers and taught me well in my days! Once on our trips back to Canada there was a child’s bike on the side of the road with a broken chain. Seeing it was the perfect size for my daughter, I grabbed the bike and started bringing it back to my parents (where I knew my handy brother could fix it). My husband and daughter’s jaw dropped…. then the accusations started – “you can’t just steal that kids bike” my husband started in on me. “No darling we are not in Holland any more we are in Canada – here we don’t steal kids bikes we fix them up and borrow them!”

hahaha Yeah we did have some of that back in Cape Breton but people often held on to stuff for garage sales and stuff. I find there are more trash pickers here in NL. We have grofvuil that comes for big garbage days. You phone them and they tell you the next time they’ll be in your area. That morning you put all your big garbage out and they come pick it up. After we put it out, it’s just a matter of time before the scavengers show up. They go through all the garbage and pick stuff out to take. I think some do it for business because you see them coming with the big trucks. The must get tipped off by the grofvuil people because otherwise I have no idea how they know when to show up.
This is so cute Tammy!! I love it! :)
I do too! :D
Great find. You are becoming more and more Dutch.

I think assimilation is inevitable for all of us after a while :)
Adorable! Love stuff like that. Wonder if it used to be a picnic basket.
haha Suzy I thought the same! It’s possible! There are no little spots that seem to be meant for dishes though so I’m thinking it probably was just a child’s suitcase or a craft box. The wicker isn’t very hard, bends quite easily so it’s not really heavy duty.
lol I can feel your excitement! great find, fab price too!! ;-) and I love the blanket (is it a blanket?) that you’re making :-)
Yup it’s a blanket! It’s a crocheted bobble baby blanket by Bernat. You can see more about it by clicking the photo on my sidebar. It’s been really fun to make :)
Love it! Craft case is the perfect job for it!

I know, right? I think it’s the fabric on the inside, it says either craft case or picnic basket!
