It’s now one week since I started my tree skirt project for x-mas. I still have a month and a half to finish it but I’m trying to get the patchwork done as quickly as possible. I’ve never gotten past the patchwork stage and the actual quilting and binding is unfamiliar territory to me so I want to leave as much time for that as possible.
These are the pieces I have completed so far.
At the moment it consists of five large squares and the two small corner triangles. Later the larger squares will be attached to each other. For now I just laid them in place to see what they look like.
It’s not perfect, I need to get a quilting ruler with inches because I think in the process of converting it to cm I was off by a few. Some of the pieces ended up a tiny bit larger than others and you can see how it sort of puckered when I sewed it together. I’m not going to get fussy about it though as this is the first quilt I’m doing all on my own. It will give me something to compare my fabulous quilting work against 20 years from now. hehe
Afterwards I quickly threw all the loose pieces into place so I could get an idea of how it will look when it’s completed. I think it will be really nice once I get it all together and start with the quilting.
Regardless, it will definately look better than the cat hair covered red felt piece of shit I’ve been using for under my tree for the last few years.
Gail, the quilt is beautiful and you should be very proud! We are often very critical of our own work, and usually without just cause. I say, enjoy the process and love everything that you finish, because, after all, that is the whole idea behind quilting. The more you quilt, the better you become and it happens without you thinking about it. Don’t ever let the pursuit of perfection, take away the pure joy of this needleart! Okay, I am done!

Your quilt looks very good!!! You are right about the ruler, or just use cm’s without converting. Just means that your skirt would have been larger. Gotta love quilting it is one of my favorite pastimes. I have been doing it for over 10 years and still don’t have it perfect.
A t-shirt quilt is wonderful way to use those t’s. And it looks great.

Gail – I think that would be a wonderful idea, to make a quilt using David’s t-shirts. How comforting that would be for you to sleep under. When I have more practice and know what I am doing more than I do now, I would be happy to make it for you.
That’s fantastic! Oh I truly wish I could do it. It’s going to be just beautiful – and must easier to clean the cat hair off of too!! :-)
Maybe once you go pro, you can give me some tips on how to make that huge quilt out of David’s logo’ed t-shirts :)
When it’s finished it’s going to look fabulous! I really like the colors. I love quilts, they remind my of my great grandmother :) I think it’s great you like to quilt, I think more people should get into it.
Wow Tammy, The quilt is beautiful. I wish i had the patience to even attempt something like that. keep us posted as you go along, can’t wait to see it finished and under your tree.
It’s coming along nicely and love the colors. I’ll have to poist more pictures of my rug i’ve done lots on it. I’ve got hrs at work to work on it. Hopefully mine will be done for the holidays and still a work with progress being my first rug like yourself with quilting.
