Ben je slimmer dan een kind? is the Dutch version of the American TV show Are you smarter than a 5th grader? and is my latest discovery for a fun way to learn more of the language.
I’m not sure what it is I like so much about this show but I’m pretty sure that it’s the fact that I understand 95% of what is being said. It’s not that they talk like they are talking to a child, but it’s easier for me to watch than a lot of other shows because there is less slang and they speak clearly. It also helps that the questions that are being asked are written down so I can see them, in case I don’t catch it when it’s being read out loud.
I learn a lot of new words just from watching this show, but I’ll never apply to be a contestant because god help me, ik ben NIET slimmer dan een kind! If you are in the Netherlands and have a decent grasp on the language, it’s worth checking out this show. You may learn something too!
Strange how the two languages are so similar and yet so different in this case. My sister-in-law and mother-in-law were here today eating oiliebollen and I had that point explained to me. Sounds funny though. Absolute opposite of what I would expect.
Hehe slimmer means smarter :) So if you were going to say Ik ben slim! You’d be saying I am smart!
My Dutch is nonexistent but doesn’t slimmer mean ‘worse’. Are they actually saying ‘are you worse than a child’? I’m German background so that’s what I’m applying here.
