Oranje!

Oranje

The other day while I was in the city center, I took some photos of the skaters at the man made ice skating rink by the city hall.   One thing that caught my attention was the orange rental skates everyone was wearing.

If you’ve ever been to the Netherlands, especially on Koninginnedag, you may have wondered why the Dutch clad themselves in orange, rather than the colors of the Dutch flag, which is white, blue and red.

Orange is the color of the royal family here in the Netherlands, the house of Oranje-Nassau, which dates back to Willem van Oranje (William of Orange).   The Dutch have taken on the color orange as a sign of their national pride and for them orange is like the Canadian maple leaf or the stars and stripes of the USA.

I can’t wait for the next World Cup so I can decorate our balconies with all the orange like everyone else!   I may even watch the games!

  2. Hi Breigh!
Nice blog you have here!! I’ve just started up a blog and am wandering around to make new friends, found yours and saw the picture on this blog, and just had to laugh since I have exactly the same picture, haha!
Then I read your Holland section, OMG, you got them totally right!! Kudos for the blog, I love it!

  3. You added me on flikr! hahahaha I was like who the heck is Breigh? So there are some pretty awful pics in there of me… I had gone through my dads computer and took all of the photos I could find before it crashed and well, I really haven’t done anything with the site since. It was great meeting you and if you are ever itching to come to CA, you are totally welcome to kick it in my spare room :)

  4. Why wait for the next world cup – you can support Holland during Euro 2008 this summer :-)
