I Think I’m One of Them

Them meaning, the Dutchies.   I know, I know… I didn’t think it would ever happened either and yes, I did check to see if monkeys are flying out of my arse.   I can’t help it though, even without trying I’m finding things I really love about this place.

One of the most recent things is Marco Borsato.  I’m not sure if that makes me one of the cool kids here in the Netherlands but I don’t really care either.   I’m not a big music buff, I’m more of a TV / Movies type, but there is one song that has been in my head for years and I haven’t gotten sick of it yet.   It’s called Zij and the best thing is, I even know all the words.   Not like with some other non-English songs where I just mimic the sounds but have no idea what I am saying  (99 Luft Ballons by Nena, for example, which is German).   I really get this song and love it.

Now I know you probably feel like you are in some alternate universe when I’m singing along happily to Dutch music, but this is just such a beautiful song.  Even more beautiful if you actually understand what he is saying.   I’ll try to translate for you… but remember my Dutch is still far from perfect!

Lyrics in Dutch (copied from the web, too lazy to type them out twice)

Zij – Marco Borsato

ze maakt me blij
zij houdt me vast maakt me vrij
zij is er altijd
zij maakt me deel van haar grote geheel
zij is de betere helft
van mij
zij…

Now the lyrics in English, even though I don’t think it’s necessary to understand this song to feel the beauty of it.

She – Marco Borsato

The look in her eyes
Changes the color of my day
It’s unbelievable
From black when she’s angry
To bluer than blue when she laughs

The sun hangs completely enamored around her
and the moon never gives her a second alone
One word from her lips
Can makes miracles each time
It’s hard to predict
Sometimes she sounds like a storm
and sometimes like a sunny season

But however hard it freezes
She is somehow thawed
as long as she’s with me I am never bored
because she

She is the sun and the moon for me
She has the best of both
So mysterious
and so warm at the same time
and she does something to me
She is free
Free to leave but she stays with me

She is the ebb and the flow together
She is unbelievable
She tells me only what she thinks
A woman and a child
She is the wind and the stillness
and she
She belongs with me
and she opens a world for me

She is the sun and the rain on my skin
The wind behind me and against me
She is in everything for me
She makes me happy
She holds me tight makes me free
She is always there
She makes me a part of her everything
She is the better half
of me
She…

Clearly it rhymes and fits together better in Dutch and some things are hard to translate to sound as nice in English.  You get the idea though.  Hope you  like it too!

  1. I think you’l like boudewijn de groot too. And I am so glad you start to like it here (And well I was in rotterdam the weekend aand I think it would get me a while to be at hom there (living in Groningen)

  2. I adore Wat is Mijn Hart – I have always loved his music. I was so pissed off when he was playing the Kuip and I couldn’t get tickets. I said the ONE thing I wanted to see when I was in Holland was him in concert!

  3. Ok now it works again, ignore me please I’m losing my mind.

  4. Oh bugger, now the video is gone. Seems like every time I put a video on my blog it disappears from YouTube the next day. I think they hate me.

  5. I like Marco Borsato as well, have for years. Funny thing is I still understand most of the songs. I find it easier to learn by music, I used to find myself trying to translate it in my head.
I am glad you are finally starting to “feel” like a dutchie. Good for you girl.

  6. Oh wow Lola that is a great song! Thanks for sharing it :)

  7. Very nice.

  8. Sorry, I screwed up the link to the video . Here it is again: http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=ZInppJdQBx8

  9. I prefer the Charles Aznavour version of SHE to any other.

My favorite Dutch song is HET LAND VAN by Lange Frans and Baas B. The lyrics are brilliant:

  10. A friend linked me to a couple of his songs… I like them. This one is really beautiful. I was lazy and just read your translation but I was happy that I understood some things on my own. Ha! I’m really digging Dutch, but then again, I’ve always been a bit of a language junkie.

  11. My good friend is always playing Hindi songs, and I too am singing along here and there.
I remember when the balloon song first came out – wow – what a blast from the past.
Found you on the blog365 Mega Feed

  12. I listen to a lot of Marco Borsato. My boyfriend got me listening to his music and I love it. I have Zij on my iPod and then my favorite song is Rood. I can’t understand most of the words but I’m picking up enough of the songs to A: Understand them and B: Learn more Dutch.
