Halfway There!

As most long time readers know, my weight loss journey started long before my gastric bypass surgery.  Well technically it probably started when I was a young teenager, but this most recent attempt started in 2009.  I tried a number of different things before finally deciding to go ahead with the surgery.  So while I am counting the lbs / kilos lost since January, I also consider the overall difference since my highest weight in 2009.

This weekend I reached a two of my goals and bought my first weight-related reward since the surgery!

New Shoes

I got a new, comfy pair of shoes for walking.  A necessary reward, as you can see, my old shoes (on the bottom) are dead as a doornail.  I bought them in 2004 on one of my many attempts to exercise and lose weight and they’ve been my walking shoes ever since.  Nobody will ever say I don’t get my money’s worth out of my shoes!

Anyway, they are my reward was for losing all of the weight I’d gained in 2011 (I’d lost approximately 38 kilos / 85 lbs in 2010 and gained back almost 20 kilos / 35-40 lbs of it in 2011).

I am now less than one kilo away from my lowest weight from 2010 and I am so excited. Soon I will be seeing weights that I’ve not seen on the scale in years.  In so long that I don’t even remember.  I remember weighing myself after I graduated high school and being 205 lbs (93 kilos) and before I left Toronto to come to the Netherlands I was almost 110 kilos (240 lbs).

That means that the last time I weighed a kilo less than I do right now I was somewhere between 18-23 years of age.  That’s almost 15 years ago…  Long enough to not even remember what it felt like.

As I was entering my weight for today into my phone app, I realized something else!!

Halfway!

If you look at the first line, it says under “start” that I am down 37.4 kilos (82.5 lbs) and under goal, it says that I still have 37.3 kilos go to.  I am now officially over the halfway point!!  I have set my goal for 65 kilos (143 lbs) which puts me just on the higher end of ‘normal’.  It’s entirely possible that I may find a comfortable spot before I get there, but I don’t know.  I have been obese all of my adult life so I have no idea what my ‘happy weight’ is so I just had to take a guess.  I’m sure I will know it when I get there.

I am quite small in stature though, I have very small hands and feet and can never say I’m big boned, so maybe that goal weight isn’t as impossible as it feels right now.  We’ll see!

In any case, this is the turning point I’ve been waiting for, getting beyond my lowest weight from last year, getting past the halfway point and moving on to bigger and better things! … or should that be smaller and better?

    My BMI is currently 30 ( down from 49 – yikes!). According to the charts I need to lose another 25 kg to be at the top end of my normal range, which at the moment seems like an impossible task. I mean, I know I have a fat a$$ but still, how to get 25 kilos off there? I’m sure all gets revealed as we get smaller though. Remember too that fat % plays a part, so you can be heavier than the BMI with a low fat % and look much smaller than someone the same weight with a higher fat %.

    Really pleased for you (hope I wasn’t fat-jacking with this post!) :P

  6. Tammy..a BMI between 25-30 is overweight….from 30-35 moderately obese, 35-40 severly obese….And above 40, morbidly obese. (which is where i was before losing my 50+ kgs?.i now sit comfortably with a bmi of 30…. Still a bit further to go!)

    • Yeah I was aiming for a BMI of just below 25 so just scraping into the normal stage haha You know what it’s like when you are just setting out with your weight loss though, the lower weights seem impossible so you still aim a little high! I’ll know my good weight when I get there I think. I’d love to be about the size my mother is now, but it’s hard to imagine at this stage. For now I’m going to concentrate on my short term goals… get below 100 kilos, 100 lbs lost, get below 200 lbs etc.

    I am curious though, you are shorter than me, how is 65 on your high end of “normal”? I am so confused by the numbers of what we should/shouldn’t be to be “normal”… I would like to weigh 70 but apparently that is STILL overweight for a person of my height??? So many conflicting sources out there.

    • To be honest I don’t remember where I calculated it. I know that they said that a BMI above 25 ( I think it was ) is considered obese so I calculated to come in just at 25, which was about 65 kilos.

      You’re right though, there are different stories everywhere. As I said I had to just guess because I really have no idea what my comfortable weight is, I just have to see when I get there. I may still be considered overweight at that point too but I won’t mind as long as I’m on the low end of overweight.

      My mom is about my height and lost over 100 lbs, I think she’s between 130-135 now and she is very thin, but not sick-looking thin. So I figure I’m going to aim for 140-145 and then see what happens.
