Have any of you seen the movie Juno yet? If not, you really have to check out the trailer.
Yesterday my friend Penny came into town and we met up after work. I get off early on Fridays so I worked through my lunch so I could get off even earlier so we could hang out. She is way pregnant, with only 5 weeks left to go, so this was going to be her last trip into Rotterdam for a while.
She’s been having massive whopper cravings, and lord knows it’s not hard to get me to go for a cheeseburger, so we went to Burger King for some sin food and gossip. Then puttered around town for a while before hopping a tram to the theater to see Juno.
I heard about this movie a lot but wasn’t all that keen on seeing it. I thought it would be something I’d just download, but since Penny was going to be in town and this would also be her last chance to catch a movie for a while… we decided to go. I mean it was a good chick flick to go to with a girlfriend.
I liked it so much more than I had anticipated. I think they chose the perfect people for the perfect roles, the storyline never bored me and the main character (Juno, played by Ellen Page) is such a sarcastic little shit, I loved her!
… and that’s not just because she’s CANADIAN! Not just Canadian, but from Nova Scotia no less, where I come from (just in case you live under a rock or are a first time visitor and didn’t know). How on earth this little girl from Halifax made her way up to being in this movie I’ll never know but I think she’s a fantastic actress and that we’ll be seeing her in a lot in the future.
There were so many funny moments, but the one that made me laugh the loudest involved this quote:
Doctors are sadists who like to play God and watch lesser people scream
This was said by Bren, the character played by Allison Janney, whom I think is one of the most quirky and unique actresses out there (10 Things I Hate About You, The West Wing… etc) and can make anything sound funny. Not sure why I found this to be so funny, but I howled and laughed. Maybe I was on a sugar high…
I’d go into more but then I’d have to quote entire conversations and I wouldn’t want to ruin any of it for anyone.
Here’s the trailer, in case you’re too lazy to click the link in the beginning. I’m not mocking you, I can never be bothered to click links either… even though people (by people, I mean my husband) are constantly spamming me with them on MSN.
If you’re a chick, go see this movie… I think you’ll love it.
If you’re a guy, go see this movie with your chick, she’ll love YOU for it and there’s some eye candy for you here and there so it won’t be a complete loss.
OH, and if you are a fan of Arrested Development you’d probably like this, it has somewhat the same humor WITH Jason Bateman and Michael Sera!
I loved Juno it was absolutely the best ever
We just watched it last night, nice movie.
Ellen got her start on Trailer Park Boys. She played the park manager’s daughter for about a year. She did another Canadian show too, but can’t recall the name. The first time I saw her was in X-Men, the last one.
I don’t know Anne Murray. ;)
haha Lola, you name dropper! :P
Her mother Martha was my home-room teacher at the Halifax Grammar School. She was pregnant with Ellen at the time.
Ian Hanomansing, (the news anchor for CBC news) is my cousin… He lived with us while he attended Dalhousie.
And my very first job was selling clothing at Nomad, a boutique owned and run by Sarah McLachlan’s adoptive mother.
I did love this film too. It makes me giggle to think that Ellen Page started out in Trailer Park Boys though!
I have to agree, what an awesome movie! I don’t normally buy dvds, since I’m the type of person who can really only watch a movie once and be done with it. But this is one I would own and watch again. Even my guy liked the movie.
Another movie that I really like if you are ever bored is “Once” a movie that takes place in Ireland. I enjoyed it but I’m not sure what everyone else’s taste is like.
It is too bad she didn’t win the Oscar, but she sure deserved the nomination!
Martin and I loved this movie. We went to see this one with friends shortly after it came out. I REALLY enjoyed this movie and was not bored. Just like you I was like I don’t think this is my type of movie but everyone else twisted my arm and we went to see it.
Ellen Paige is awesome and I had no idea she was from Halifax either. I saw her on the red carpet while watching the Oscars and had my fingers crossed for her. Though she didn’t win, still this is a big deal for someone who’s talented and is a Nova Scotian.
Her first movie was “Hard Candy” though it is kinda creepy Martin didn’t think it was too bad. Check it out if you haven’t already and let me know what you think. you will prob agree with me that Hard Candy is def one creepy movie better left on the shelf. LOL
